Falls Township officials announced details Friday on a special meeting relating to the proposed Elcon hazardous waste treatment facility.
The meeting, which was first mentioned earlier this week by the Board of Supervisors, will be held on Tuesday, April 30 at 7 p.m. at Keller Hall at Pennsbury High School’s West Campus.

The special meeting is expected to lead to the Supervisors considering the controversial land development application.
The land development plans for Elcon are expected to first come before the Falls Township Planning Commission, an advisory body, at their Tuesday, March 26 meeting at 7 p.m. at the township complex along Lincoln Highway. The company will seek preliminary land development approval, which will still need to be reviewed and considered by the Supervisors at the April 30 meeting before it can move forward.
“Until Elcon’s recent formal land development plan submission, the Falls governing body had no jurisdiction to weigh in on the project. Even with so many against the project, the Supervisors are required by law to fairly review and consider the plan,” a statement from the township said.

Elcon has proposed building on a 22-acre portion of a 33-acre property in the Keystone Industrial Port Complex. According to past filings with the DEP, Elcon expects to employ about 55 people at the automated facility that can handle about 410 metric tons of waste a day. The facility has been expected to process 150,000 to 210,000 tons of chemical and pharmaceutical waste that would be transported to the facility every year.
At the Board of Supervisors meeting earlier this week, a large crowd of area residents spoke out and urged the Supervisors to deny Elcon’s plan to build their waste treatment facility. Those in opposition to the plan have raised their voices before the Supervisors for the past few years.

The township only recently has received land development plans for Elcon’s proposal.
Presently, the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) continues to review the technical details of the company’s proposal.
