Two Hot County Races Go To GOP Incumbents

The race for Bucks County Sheriff and Prothonotary turned out to be two of the hottest in the area.

In the end, the voters chose to keep incumbent Sheriff Edward “Duke” Donnelly and Prothonotary Patricia Bachtle.
Sheriff Candidate Dennis McCauley, a former Abington police official and head of Bucks County Community College security, made headway during the election and only finished several hundred votes behind Donnelly.
The race for sheriff between Donnelly and McCauley was not as close as several political insiders predicted. Donnelly pulled ahead of McCauley by roughly 6,300 votes.

Bachtle beat Democrat Ronald Smolow, a lawyer who wanted to reform the office, by nearly 1,000 votes.
McCauley promised to reform the sheriff’s office, which has been the focus of at least one grand jury investigation.

Here is McCauley’s concession message:
Back in February I began a campaign for the office of Bucks County Sheriff. I worked hard to earn the support of Bucks County voters. Tonight, however, the voters have chosen to go in a different direction. I must respect the decision of the voters. It is the American way.
Congratulations to Sheriff Donnelly on his victory. Going forward, I wish him the best and I also wish the best to the dedicated men and women who serve as deputies in the Sheriff’s Office.
I’d like to thank my supporters. It is truly humbling to know that people were so giving of their time and energy and resources simply because they believed in me.
Most of all I’d like to thank my wife, Sheilagh. A political campaign is as demanding on a partner as it is on the candidate. Perhaps more so. But Sheilagh supported me every step of the way.
