The man who shot himself in the chest Sunday evening in Fairless Hills after talking with police is expected to survive, Falls Township authorities said Monday morning.

The man, whose name and age is not being released, shot himself in the chest after terminating a phone call with a Falls police negotiator, Lt. Todd Pletnick said. The man is recovering from the serious injury at St. Mary Medical Center in Middletown.

Pletnick said patrol officers were called to the 200 block of Coventry Road Sunday evening after the man’s estranged wife called 911 to report her husband was alone and talking of hurting himself. She told the dispatcher he did not have a weapon.

The man remained in his father’s house as police outside attempted to talk him out, authorities said. Just before 9 p.m., the man stumbled out of the front door and collapsed, suffering from the gunshot wound, according to Pletnick.

“We had no idea he had a gun,” Pletnick said.

Paramedics rushed to aid the man and an ambulance escorted by at least four police vehicles screamed to St. Mary Medical Center.

Pletnick described the man as being “distraught” and said the man hang up on the police negotiator just before shooting himself.

Neighbors told LevittownNow.com that police asked them to stay inside and closed a portion of Coventry Road down as they were talking with the man.
