Families visiting the Bristol Township Municipal Park splash and spray pad this summer can expect fewer closures thanks to a filtration system overhaul.

Township officials said the completion of a new filtration system installation at the popular Bath Road park feature is designed to end the chronic maintenance delays that have sidelined the facility during the summer.
The upgrade replaces a labor-intensive cartridge filtration setup with an advanced backwash system.
Bristol Township Public Works Director Charlie Dearnley said the previous equipment as a major drain on municipal resources and staff time.

“That is the old system. It was a terrible filtration system that was a cartridge system that required hours of maintenance every single day,” Dearnley said. “The new system will completely eliminate all that maintenance.”
The new technology uses a self-cleaning backwash principle that allows the unit to maintain water quality standards automatically.

The old filters required staff to manually open, clean, and replace components regularly, but the new system is designed to operate maintenance-free for 30 years, Dearnley said.

Problems with the original equipment forced the township to shutter the spray pad on the hottest days of the year when demand from families is highest.
“It’s going to make all the difference in a word,” Dearnley said of the new system.

The splash pad has been a popular feature of the township’s $7 million municipal park since it opened in 2021.
As a no-cost option, it has become a staple for residents seeking relief from hot summer temperatures.

Officials expect the increased reliability of the new system to provide consistent access throughout the upcoming season.
