We’ve seen a few days’ worth of sunshine and warmer temperatures ahead of another cold front that’ll being lots of rain and the possibility of some icing and snow before colder temperatures come back.
The primarily rainmaker impacting the area Thursday is part of a much larger system that has been or will be impacting the eastern two-thirds of the United States with more significant icing, snowfall and flooding. The nearly 2,000-mile-long storm stretches from Texas, where snow and ice is currently falling, to New England, where the same now and ice could fall Friday into the weekend.

Rain chances will increase early Thursday morning and will continue into Friday morning. Over an inch of rain is possible as showers will persist for a good 24-hour time frame. The issue that comes into play is when the changeover to freezing rain and sleet will come in, before the entire system moves out entirely. Currently, the forecast indicates that light freezing rain is possible in the afternoon and evening on Friday, with a possible brief changeover to snow before the system moves out altogether.
The freezing rain and sleet pose two main problems. First the timing of the glazing could be before the rush hour on Friday afternoon. Second, road crews cannot pretreat roadways because of the heavy rainfall that will precede the frozen precipitation. Luckily, the weather models – those dreaded weather computer models – have been reducing the total precipitation on the back end of the storm system and the overall duration of the snow, sleet, and freezing rain.
Once the cold front moves off, the remainder of Friday and the weekend look cold but at least dry with abundant sunshine. Temperatures will moderate by the start of the new workweek, with the next chance of precipitation not coming until late week.
