One of the most iconic signs in the region is burning a bit brighter.

The Delaware River Joint Toll Bridge Commission (DRJTBC) officially switched on their new LED lighting system for the “Trenton Makes The World Takes” sign that adorns the Lower Trenton Bridge Thursday following a ceremony.

The new sign features state-of-the-art LED lighting that has the ability to change color. This can be rolled out for for holidays and other special occasions. During a test earlier this year, the sign was green to celebrate the Philadelphia Eagles’ success.

DRJTBC officials said last year that the new sign should be more reliable and reduce energy costs.

The new sign, which was celebrated by officials in Pennsylvania and New Jersey, came on just in time to coincide with the 100th anniversary of the manufacturing-age “Trenton Makes The World Takes” slogan that first appeared in lights along on the span that connects Morrisville and Trenton.

The famed slogan came from a 1910 Trenton Chamber of Commerce contest that took submissions. The winner – lumber yard owner and future New Jersey State Sen. S. Roy Heath – received a $25 contest prize but returned it.

The first lighted sign – wood letters with sequins – was installed in 1911 but disappeared after the current bridge was built in 1928. In 1935, a new lighted sign was installed and has been replaced at least five times.

The previous sign was lit with 9 feet by 6 inch high letters with neon tubes inside.
