The Giant Food Store on New Falls Road in Middletown’s Levittown section began selling beer and wine.

The simply named Beer and Wine Eatery opened Thursday in a special section of the store. On Friday, the store will celebrate the grand opening with beer and wine tastings from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

The store received approval in summer to construct the 30-seat special section that sits in the  left rear of the Giant. The section is staffed by specially-trained employees and separated from the rest of the grocery store.

Staff at the Giant has worked over the past two months to construct the Beer and Wine Eatery, according to a company spokesman.

“Our team is super excited to officially open the Beer & Wine Eatery, but we really want to thank our customers for their patience as we prepared to bring it to life,” said Rob Wagner, the store manager. “This addition helps us bring it all together for our customers because who doesn’t like to pair great food with a nice bottle of wine or the perfect beer?”

Giant’s spokesperson said the new store-within-a-store features domestic, imported and craft beers along with various varieties of wine. The Beer and Wine Eatery also has eat-in and take-out food offerings.

When Giant officials went before the Middletown Board of Supervisors last summer, an attorney for the company said customers will be able to sip on as many as two beers and a glass of wine in the eatery section. Customers will also be able to purchase take-out beer and wine with a limit of two six-packs of beer. The Beer and Wine Eatery will be open Monday through Saturday from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Sundays from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Giant has been adding beer and wine sales at its stores by purchasing licenses over the past few years. The company said they have 56 Giant and Martin’s Food Markets selling both beer and wine in Pennsylvania, including New Hope and Willow Grove, Montgomery County. In 2014, the Fairless Hills ShopRite in Bristol Township added a beer garden and small cafe similar to Giant’s concept.
