Beer & Wine Sales Coming To Levittown Giant Food Store

Shoppers at the Giant Food Store along New Falls Road will soon be able to grab a brewski or glass of wine in a new eatery planned for the grocery location.

The Middletown Board of Supervisors approved the transfer of a liquor license from Doylestown to the grocery chain’s Levittown location. The board approved the transfer 3-2 with Supervisor Tom Totsi voting against the transfer, citing concern it would hurt small businesses that sell beer and wine.

Ellen Freeman, an attorney representing Giant, said the liquor license will accompany a new in-store restaurant that will serve sandwiches, salads, soups and sushi. Aside from customers being able to sip on as many as two beers and a glass of wine in the eatery section, customers will also be able to purchase take-out beer and wine with a limit of two six-packs of beer.

The special area in the left rear of the Giant will be separated from the rest of the grocery store. There will be seating for up to 30 customers, Freeman said.

Giant already has similar set ups in the New Hope and Willow Grove locations.

Freeman explained to the Board of Supervisors that the store will be staffed by specially-trained staff and have a dedicated manager for the section. All staff who work in the special section will be Responsible Alcohol Management Program certified by the state.

Hours of the eatery will be 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 9 a.m. and 10 p.m. Sunday.

A Giant special projects manager said to township officials that the addition of the eatery will begin in August and aims to finish by October.

In 2014, the Fairless Hills ShopRite in Bristol Township added a beer garden and small cafe similar to Giant’s concept.
