Bristol Township School Board member Kathy Bachman lived in Levittown for more than six decades, from her childhood until her death this week. She spent several of her final years serving the community on the school board.
Bachman, 68, died Tuesday after suffering a “serious illness,” officials said. At Monday’s school board meeting, President Angela Nober asked the public to send their well wishes to Bachman but did not elaborate on her condition.
Bachman, who lived in the Levittown home she grew up in, served on the Bristol Township School Board since 2009 and rarely missed a meeting.
“Kathy has been a tireless advocate for children. Her superior work ethic could be seen in the energy and dedication she directed toward the Curriculum, Policy and Technology Committee, the Operations Committee and the Finance Committee,” Superintendent Dr. Sam Lee said.
Bachman was a proponent of the district plan to close the current nine aging schools and construct three new, “state-of-the-art” buildings. She was also a supporter of student achievements, always snapping photos of students following their board presentations.
“Kathy was a fervent supporter of public education and a strong advocate of Bristol Township and I am proud to have served by her side,” Board Vice President Earl Bruck said. He added, “her loss is the entire community’s.”
Lee said Bachman, who was reelected to the school board in 2013, “enjoyed collaborating with fellow School Board members and our administration.”
“I am also extremely grateful for the support she gave as a member of the BTSD-CREATE team and her love for what the group has worked so hard to accomplish over the last four years,” Bruck said.
Following her passing, BTSD-CREATE, a nonprofit that funds programs in the district, will present a scholarship in her honor. Bruck said it will be called the “Kathy Bachman Memorial Scholarship for Art, Music and Literacy.”
“On behalf of the entire BTSD community, our sincere sympathies go out to her family,” Lee said.
