The presentation, organized and hosted by Bill Pezza of the college’s Social and Behavioral Sciences Department, is titled “Responding to the Islamic State and Stabilizing the Middle East: The Political and Diplomatic Challenge.”

From the college:

Based in Erbil, the capital of the Kurdish region, the Fines administered relief, development, and peace-building work with Iraqi partner organizations throughout the country. Deborah Fine also taught English to young children and mentored teachers. Last summer, they witnessed the influx of tens of thousands of Christians, Yazidis, and others into Erbil and Dohuk provinces as Islamic State forces took over Mosul and its surrounding towns and villages.

“If we’ve learned anything after three wars in the Middle East, it is that we need as much accurate information as possible when developing a strategy to deal with the emerging threat from ISIS,” said Pezza. “Jim and Debbie can share first-hand experiences about what is happening on the ground.”
