Silver Lake Nature Center is gearing up to finish construction on a building like nothing else.

The centerโ€™s Earthship project in Bristol Township, architecturally designed by Michael Reynolds, will be have a carbon footprint of, ready for it? Zero.

The structure, which began construction in 2011, will be built from entirely recycled products, and have the ability to heat and cool itself, gather itโ€™s own water, recycle itโ€™s own waste, and even produce itโ€™s own food, making the building completely self-reliant.

Reynolds, also known as the โ€˜Garbage Warrior,โ€™ has been designing structures similar to this one for more than 40 years; but Earthship will officially be the first of itโ€™s kind on this side of the country.

According to Silver Lake Nature Center, thatโ€™s for two reason, โ€œWell for one, they look different and people are slow to change,โ€ a recent press release noted. โ€œFor another, they havenโ€™t exactly matched up with existing codes and regulations.โ€

Earthship is designed to be a cutting edge example of homes and buildings that could be more prevalent as the need to reduce the planetโ€™s carbon footprint becomes more critical.

The project will, according to Silver Lake, function off of rainwater, solar energy and thermal mass.

Just last month, Silver Lake finished its last fundraiser for the project, by selling engraved bricks which will take place of the buildingโ€™s entryway floor.

The project is expected to open shortly.
