Just as the internet craze winds down and the temperature approaches freezing – four local business owners are bringing the ALS ice bucket challenge back into the spotlight – and in over the top style.

For months, Mike LaCouture and his three business partners of Broken Goblet Brewery in Bristol Township have been advocating for their version of the popular internet challenge. The men have reversed the rules, putting the easy part of donating in the hands of the public and the hard part of being dowsed with ice water in the hands of the men of Broken Goblet. Read more about the brewery’s success.

It is finally time for them to pay back their bet.

On Saturday, December 6 at 12 p.m., the four owners of the brewery, including LaCouture himself, will set up a temporary pool in the parking lot at 1500 Grundy’s Lane in Bristol, fill the pool with freezing cold water, strip down and then have an ice truck back up and dump ice into the pool.

“Hell- if you donated and want to come shovel ice on us, the more the merrier,” LaCouture wrote on his Crowd Rise campaign page.

The brewery will be providing free hot cocoa, free baked goods and free samples of their Christmas beer for anyone who wishes to watch or pile them with ice.

The “Reverse Ice Bucket Challenge” is LaCouture’s response to the thousands of videos posted to the internet of which not a single donation to the ALS cause was made.

In just a few short months and with no prior mention of the name of his business, LaCouture has been successful in raising over $5,000 for the cause, a cause which is very near and dear to him.

LaCouture’s father Carle, passed away fromย ALS the day after Christmas just two years ago. LaCouture, who served as a primary caregiver to his father,ย called the disease “one of the most insidious and horrible things I have ever watched hit the human body in my whole life.”

He feels that no known cause, cure, no chronic maintenance and no pharmacologic management of the disease is the real bone chiller. Not to mention the disease has a 5 year survival rate of just 13%, 76% lower than that of Breast Cancer, according to The Cochrane Database of Systemic Reviews.

“The only way we can try to isolate a cause, or perhaps turn the corner on prevention or maintenance – is money,” said LaCouture.

The hype surrounding the ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis)Ice Bucket Challenge may be over for most, but LaCouture and the Broken Goblet boys are determined to keep the disease in the spotlight for the long haul.
