Provided by the Bucks County Department of Consumer Protection:

 Q. I have noticed the Bucks County Weights and Measures truck all over the place checking gas station pumps. It occurred to me and made me wonder, as I was having a home heating oil delivery, if the oil company trucks are inspected as well. If so, who is responsible for those inspections? – S.L., Doylestown

A. All oil delivery trucks that do business in Bucks County are also inspected by the Bucks County Department of Weights and Measures. They are inspected and tested for accuracy each year. They are subject to additional inspections if a consumer calls the Weights and Measures Department with a concern over the amount of home heating oil they had received. Upon a passing inspection an official Weights and Measures seal is placed on the vehicle. The color of the seal is different each year. If the truck does not pass inspection it must be repaired and re-inspected before any deliveries can be made to the public. The Weights and Measures Department recognizes now more than ever that the cost of fuel oil, natural gas, propane and gasoline have risen rapidly and are putting serious financial strain on consumer’s budgets. This department acts as the third party in every Weights and Measures transaction. They are constantly and consistently testing throughout the year. The department is also involved in checking scales, scanners and timing devices.

An informational brochure that explains their duties and responsibilities in the protection of the consumer is available on their website. It covers everything from firewood sale invoices to short weight commodities in a store.
