The new acute-care inpatient hospital features 50 beds and is dedicated to the treatment and recovery of individuals who have experienced illness or injury such as stroke, brain injury, trauma, spinal cord or orthopedic injury, neurological conditions, amputation, or other diagnoses requiring skilled rehabilitation.

The rehabilitation hospital is built with four pods, which are specialized units to handle certain ailments. Each pod will also features specially trained staff, officials said this week.

The units include:

  • Stroke Recovery
  • Neurology Recovery (brain injuries)
  • Spinal Cord Injury and other Neurological Conditions
  • Muscular Skeletal (traumatic injuries, amputations, etc)

“Every plan of care is highly individualized to the specific needs and capabilities of each patient to return them to their highest level of independence and quality of life,” hospital officials said in a statement.

“Having a specially designated free-standing hospital solely dedicated to recovery and rehabilitation is a tremendous benefit to patients needing that level of focused care,” Lisa Haney, CEO of St. Mary Rehabilitation Hospital, said. Haney was formerly in charge of the inpatient rehabilitation across the street at St. Mary Medical Center.

The new hospital is a joint venture between St. Mary Medical Center and Nashville-based Centerre Healthcare.

The ground of the rehabilitation hospital features a gazebo, basketball backboard system, walking path along with a putting green. The multiple-surface walkways allow patients to practice real-world conditions and a sports utility vehicle stationed in the courtyard allows for practice in entering and exiting a vehicle.

St. Mary Medical Center purchased the land where the new hospital was built in 2010 from the Neshaminy School District.
