Police confirm officers were called to the area for the sound of “multiple” shots. Arriving officers launched a search for the source.

Students and staff at the Newtown Friends School on Newtown-Langhorne Road were among those to hear the shots and notified police, according to authorities. Students were brought inside and a brief lockdown was put in effect, police and school officials said.

Sgt. Michael Lubold said officers conducted a house-to-house search around the school and were only able to find residents who also heard the gunshots. He said patrol officers searched a nearby farm, park land and neighborhoods but did not find the source of the gunshots.

“It was probably hunters in the area,” Lubold said, adding hunters do frequent some of the nearby woods.

Rebecca Niszczak, director of admissions for the Newtown Friends School, said the school prepares for situations to arise and all staff and students handled the situation well.
