Governor Tom Corbett and First Lady Susan Corbett unveiled a portrait of Hannah Callowhill Penn last week in Harrisburg.

The portrait of William Penn’s second wife and Pennsylvania’s first female governor will be displayed in the governor’s office in Harrisburg. Governor Corbett recently told LevittownNow.com he has a portrait of William Penn over his desk.

“[Hannah Penn’s] wisdom of her leadership and strength of her character mark her as the first women to lead what has become the Keystone State in our nation,” Governor Corbett said, according to an article on PennLive.com. “She is an example of women’s leadership in Pennsylvania long before we were an independent nation.”

“Hannah Penn ruled the colony of Pennsylvania for six years after her husband, William Penn, was incapacitated by a stroke in 1712. After William Penn died, she ruled for another eight years in her own name from England,” according to information from the state.

First Lady Corbett talked about Hannah Penn’s important role in the state’s history when she and her husband visited Pennsbury Manor, the site of the Penn’s former home in Falls Township, earlier this month.
