The approximately 400-pound black bear spotted lurking near the Hulmeville and Middletown border yesterday was also spotted in Bristol by a state wildlife conservation officer, a Pennsylvania Game Commission official said Thursday afternoon. The officials was not clear if the bear was seen in Bristol Borough or township.
The bear is assumed to be a male and is “mostly staying out of trouble,” Cheryl Trewella, who is the commission’s information and education supervisor for the southeast region, said. She did add, however, that he is accused of eating out of a local resident’s bird feeder.
The officer assigned to Bucks County by the commission is attempting to track down the bear, which may have come down from Upper Bucks County and is likely just circling through the area, according to the information and education supervisor.
“He’s not staying one place, that we know,” Trewella said.
While bears are relatively uncommon in the lower end of the county, the central and upper portion usually see several reports of black bears.
The commission’s area office said they have been tracking the bear through phone calls.
Game officers suspect the bear is a male due to its size and the fact that it is traveling alone.
Trewella said residents should not try to approach or feed the bear. She also said local residents should not put out their household trash until the day it is to be collected and they should check outside at night before letting their pets outside alone.
“People need to respect that it is a big wild animal,” she told LevittownNow.com.
Officials do not believe the bear poses great risk to area residents.
