A section of Newportville Road will shut down for five days as crews advance a massive, $1 billion modernization project on the Pennsylvania Turnpike.

The closure will begin at 6 a.m. on Monday, June 1, and is scheduled to wrap up by 3 p.m. on Friday, June 5, PennDOT said.

During the closure, Newportville Road will be blocked off and detoured between Zimmerman Lane and New Falls Road so workers can perform bridge work.

PennDOT officials said motorists will be redirected to use Zimmerman Lane and New Falls Road to bypass the construction zone.

Local access will be maintained for residents and businesses within the area, and drivers are being urged to allow extra travel time.

Officials warned that traffic backups and delays are expected near the work site.

The bridge construction is being completed by the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission under a PennDOT Highway Occupancy Permit.

The bridge work is a piece of a $1 billion project aimed at widening and overhauling a segment of the Pennsylvania Turnpike.

The modernization project stretches from Bensalem Boulevard to the I-95 flyover connection.

Once completed, the project will expand the turnpike from four lanes to six, install new sound barriers, upgrade local stormwater management facilities, and lay the groundwork for future highway connection ramps.
