Power was restored to thousands of PECO customers in the Levittown area by Saturday morning after strong storms swept through the region Thursday.

PECO reported that just under 1,800 customers remained without power Saturday morning, a drop from the peak of 15,000 outages reported Thursday night. The largest amount of remaining outages were in Bristol and Middletown townships.

Some residents said they have been given PECO restoration times of Sunday night, while many others said they were told power should be back by Saturday night.

As temperatures were expected to reach 90 degrees with high humidity Saturday, the Middletown Township Senior Center at 2141 Trenton Road will be open from noon to 6 p.m. as a cooling center and charging station.

The prolonged power outage caused some restaurants to be closed Friday and Saturday, and some stores to have to dump refrigerated goods.

Utility crews worked through Friday night and early Saturday to restore power service.

In addition to power restoration, Verizon and Comcast services were slowly returning, and residents continued to clean up felled branches and limbs across the area.

The National Weather Service’s regional office in Mount Holly, New Jersey, said the storm damage was likely caused by straight-line winds ranging from 60 to 70 mph.

According to PECO, the company’s emergency operations teams jumped into service after the storms. More than 1,400 contractors and crews from other utilities were assisting utility crews in the region, with an additional 250 workers arriving Friday afternoon.
