Joseph D’Emidio, who stormed the beaches of Normandy during the war, will turn 100 on September 28.

Mayor Ralph DiGuiseppe III presented D’Emidio with a proclamation recognizing his service and contributions to the community.

“Joe, we’re here to present you with this proclamation. We wish we’re here to present you with another one next year and the year after. And God bless you and everything you do,” DiGuiseppe said.

The mayor highlighted the rarity of D’Emidio’s life, noting that less than 1 percent of those who participated in the Normandy invasion are still alive today.

Council President Ralph DiGuiseppe praised D’Emidio’s appearance.

“You got more hair than most of the people staying. You look good,” he joked.
