A mix-up over new recycling bins has left residents of Bristol Borough grappling with confusion after a letter from waste hauler J.P. Mascaro & Sons was mistakenly sent out earlier this spring.

The premature communication led some residents to believe they would be forced to use larger, new recycling bins, which they feared would not fit comfortably at some borough homes.

During Monday’s council meeting, Bristol Borough Council President Ralph DiGuiseppe addressed the community’s concerns.

“Nobody has to take a recycling bin,” DiGuiseppe stated, clarifying that the new bins are optional.

“If you want a bin, you call J.P. Mascaro and tell them you want one,” he said.

If you donโ€™t want a new recycling bin, donโ€™t request one and it wonโ€™t be delivered, DiGuiseppe advised residents.

The confusion was compounded when some residents who called for a new bin were told by J.P. Mascaro & Sons that they were unaware of the program.

DiGuiseppe explained that the waste hauler had sent out the letter without complete approval from all involved parties.

The borough is now coordinating with J.P. Mascaro to issue an updated letter to fix the situation, said DiGuiseppe.

Residents who prefer not to switch to a new bin can continue using their existing ones.

The bins come as part of the borough and J.P. Mascaro & Sons’ new five-year, $18 million contract that took effect in January.

The contract includes twice-a-week curbside trash collection and once-per-week recyclables curbside collection.
