The cost for trash hauling in Bristol Borough is increasing by 85 percent, according to a new contract recently approved.
Bristol Borough and J.P. Mascaro & Sons have agreed to a five-year, $18 million contract starting in 2024. The contract features an optional two year extension.

The deal includes twice-a-week curbside trash collection and once-per-week recyclables curbside collection.
“The trash is going up 85 percent. If you look at every contract throughout, it’s 100 percent in some areas. It’s in line with everybody else. There is no way its going down. I think we have a good price,” Council President Ralph DiGuiseppe said.
The bid, according to Councilperson Lorraine Cullen, was the only one received by borough officials.

DiGuiseppe said Waste Management and Republic Services both obtained information on submitting a bid, but the companies never submitted a proposal.
“We are very excited to be working with the Borough of Bristol. We look forward to serving Bristol Borough residents for years to come,” said Sam Augustine, J.P. Mascaro & Sons’ director of sales and marketing.

Borough Manager Jim Dillon said the cost for each property in the borough will be figured out later this year during the budget process.
The hike comes amid increases in municipal trash hauling costs around the region.
DiGuiseppe said late last year that he expected the next waste contract to come in at a higher price that previous years due to changes in the market.

The borough has used J.P. Mascaro & Sons for years for trash hauling.
The current trash contract runs through the end of 2023 as part of a 2020 contract extension that paid the Montgomery County company upfront but locked in a rate of $115 per property for years 2021, 2022, and 2023.

In 2020 and 2021, J.P. Mascaro & Sons, like many waste haulers, faced delays due to staffing shortages and other problems caused by the pandemic.
