Two physicians will take on dual roles with their recent leadership appointments at St. Mary Medical Center, and plans for in-house updates and outward visibility are already taking shape.

Dr. Michael Magro DO has become the president of the Middletown Township medical center, a 370-bed hospital and Level I Trauma Center. Dr. Edward O’Dell DO is the hospital’s new chief medical officer.

Magro and O’Dell will remain as president and chief medical officer respectively at Nazareth Hospital in Philadelphia in addition to their duties at St. Mary. Both St. Mary and Nazareth are members of Trinity Health Mid-Atlantic (THMA).

Increased commitment to patient care and more involvement with families and organizations top an ambitious agenda that, Magro said, could make St. Mary the “go-to” place for medical care in Bucks County.

Jim Woodward, president and CEO of THMA, called the physicians effective leaders and community partners.

“I am excited for our patients, community members, and colleagues at St. Mary to enjoy the benefits of their forward-thinking vision,” Woodward said.

Magro and O’Dell also look forward to cultivating a patient-centered approach, coupled with community engagement.

“With these motivating factors in mind, it is always our top priority to reinvest in the services that are most meaningful to our patients and community,” Magro said.

Key initiatives have already begun, or are in the planning stages to help St. Mary reach those goals:

·       Transition to the EPIC electronic medical record (EMR) system that will provide many advantages in data collection management and record access.

·       Several capital purchases and projects, some already in the works, including a new cardiac catheterization lab at St. Mary.

·       Expansion of Medical education to create a pipeline of physicians for the future.

·       Plans for community outreach that include rejoining the Lower Bucks Chamber of Commerce and plans to sponsor the forthcoming arts and crafts festival at Tyler State Park.

·       Reinstatement of hospital volunteers once conditions allow. The volunteer program was halted during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Magro, a trained hospitalist (a physician who works exclusively in hospital settings), has served in leadership positions for 12 years, four of them at Nazareth Hospital. He received his degree from the Philadelphia College of Osteopathy.

O’Dell has been Nazareth Hospital’s chief medical officer since 2018. He received a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology/Psychology from Montclair State University in Montclair, N.J.

Before receiving his doctorate degree from the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine, he earned a doctorate degree from Palmer College of Chiropractic in Davenport, Iowa.

Magro said that providing the best patient care starts with a “renewed investment” as active partners in the community.

“We believe that those we are honored to serve, our patients, should be at the center of every decision,” Magro said.
