More than a year delayed, the Hulmeville Avenue bridge over the CSX and SEPTA tracks will open next month after a complete reconstruction.

PennDOT spokesperson Robyn Briggs told LevittownNow.com the opening is currently set for Friday, August 19. A ceremony for the opening is being planned.

The bridge that carries Hulmeville Avenue over the tracks in Middletown Township and between Langhorne Manor and Penndel boroughs has been closed since the previous bridge’s deterioration led to an emergency closure in spring 2019.

Construction on the bridge started in 2020, with an expected competition of spring 2021. Work was delayed in March and April 2020 due to the pandemic.

Chester County-based J.D. Eckman Inc. has been handling the $5.2 million project for PennDOT.

The previously span was an 86-year-old three-span steel girder structure that was 147 feet long and 32 feet wide. The last bridge carried about 4,653 vehicles per day prior to its 2019 closure.

The new Hulmeville Avenue span will be named to commemorate U.S. Marine Corps Private First Class John Elton Candy, a resident of Middletown Township. Candy died on October 11, 1968 while serving in Vietnam.

The closure of the bridge has frustrated residents, especially those who used it as a detour when long CSX freight trains blocked the crossing at nearby Bellevue Avenue (Route 413).

A recently planned closure of Bellevue Avenue for track work was delayed until the bridge reopens.
