The Sunday Breakfast Rescue Mission Thrift Store in Penndel will close at the end of the month.

The nonprofit Philadelphia-based Christian organization announced Friday that liquidation sales will begin at the Penndel and Philadelphia stores as the locations wind down operations.

While the Sunday Breakfast Rescue Mission once saw “modest revenue” from the stores, the nonprofit has seen a drop in sales and increasing costs to operate the locations.

“We recognize that without the support and loyalty of our donors and dedicated staff, we could never have held out this long,” nonprofit President Rev. Jeremy Montgomery said. “To our loyal customers and supporters: We’ve seen an amazing outpouring of love and support throughout the years, and we truly appreciate it. Our stores brought great deals, assistance, and fulfillment to many whenever we could.”

In recent years, there have been investments to boost sales at the Sunday Breakfast Rescue Mission thrift stores but they have not made the locations profitable.

Montgomery said the stores have created a “financial burden” that “severely drains valuable resources” from the nonprofit’s goal to serve the homeless, hungry, and hurting. He added that the program to feed the homeless and hungry in Philadelphia will continue along with the shelter for men and 12-month residential women’s transitional home.

“What once was an opportunity to generate modest revenue for the organization, while serving the needs of the underprivileged, has become a financial burden on the Mission. Costs have escalated and the market for similar goods has become highly saturated and competitive, resulting in significant losses to the Mission,” Montgomery said.

In late 2010, the Sunday Breakfast Rescue Mission purchased the Penndel property where the thrift store is located for $500,000, according to county property records.
