Winder Village Civic Association Hopes To Save Small Community Center

It doesn’t look like much but for the Winder Village Civic Association, the small building a few yards from some high-tension PECO lines off Fayette Drive means a lot.

Nadine Lynch said the civic association that serves the residents of Winder Village in Bristol Township helps the young, old and everyone in between. She volunteers and brings meals to the community’s aging residents, helps donate coats to children and often offers her spare change to help her neighbors.

Lynch spoke before the Bristol Township School Board last week in an effort to try to save the building that sits on the 20-plus acre site of the closed Lafayette Elementary School and Delhass Woods. She explained to elected officials that she wants to see if a quarter- or half-acre portion of property can be subdivided for the nonprofit Winder Village Civic Association.

The district is actively marketing their five closed school properties, including the large Lafayette site. While district officials would not comment on whether a deal had been struck, they confirmed there had been interest in several sites and spoke as if there was some urgency on any subdivision for the Lafayette property.

“I could see this as a win-win,” Lynch said, adding a new owner might be able to write-off the donation of the land.

Tony Tucker, president of the Winder Village Civic Association and a former Bristol Township Council member, said the center is important to the community and he hopes to work with the school board and township to keep it open.

“We’ve had some financial difficulties, but we’re getting help,” he said, adding another organization is sharing the building with them and paying for upkeep and utilities.

The facility, according to Tucker has not caused any problems for police and had been a useful resource for the community. Around Christmas, the building often opens its doors for local kids, providing a gift for each one.

Members of the school board and district solicitor David Truelove said they would work on the matter with the Winder Village Civic Association.
