Work to convert the former Clara Barton Elementary School into the new Bristol Township School District Administration, Operations and Transportation Center could start as soon as this fall.

The district plans to use Reynold’s Energy Services to complete an estimated $9.4 million Act 39 Guaranteed Energy Savings Act (GESA) project. The school board will vote next month on whether to officially hire Reynolds Energy Services for the upgrades.

The work will upgrade the former school building while providing a yet undetermined amount of guaranteed energy savings of the next 20 years. Per Act 39, 85 percent of the upgrades must be to energy systems or infrastructure and have a guaranteed saving over the next 20 years.

The proposed work, which were mapped out by Schrader Group Architecture, will upgrade the exterior envelope of the building, interior electrical and ventilation systems. A new electrical connection will be added along with new windows and exterior, said Damian Spahr from Reynolds Energy Services.

Spahr said the project was brought down from an estimated cost of between $10.15 and $10.3 million to $9.4 million by breaking down the costs and looking for savings. One major savings of nearly $250,000 will be breaking the building into five sections with fire breaks instead of adding a sprinkler system throughout.

Due to the work being performed on the closed school outside of the busy summer months, Spahr said Reynolds Energy Services expects to save at least $120,000.

The work could begin as soon as September and would be completed by April or May of next year.

Environmental abatement of the building is set to be finished before the end of the month.

Spahr said work to add infrastructure for the district’s transportation center will not be included in the GESA project and will have to be bid out separately.
