PennDOT hosted an open house Tuesday evening in Bensalem Township for residents to review plans for the construction of the U.S. (Route) 1 Improvement Project.

The project, which has been broken down into four sections, will focus on the replacement of aging bridges and highway safety enhancements of a nearly six mile segment of Route 1 known as the “Super Highway” and will cost approximately $206 million.

Project improvements will exist entirely in Bucks County and extend just north of Philadelphia at Old Lincoln Highway in Bensalem to the Pine Street (Route 413) overpass in Middletown Township.

The first section, labeled as RC1, will include improvements to Route 1, Street Road, the Route 1 and the Street Road interchange and the Route 1, and the PA Turnpike interchange and Bristol Road. The first section of the project is estimated to cost approximately $85 million.

The second section, labeled as RC2, will include improvements to Route 1, Rockhill Drive, Route 1 and the Rockhill Drive interchange, and Route 1 and the Business 1 interchange. The second section of the project will cost approximately $105 million.

The existing bridges along both the RC1 and RC2ย project corridor either are or are nearly structurally deficient based on recent inspection reports. Four of the bridges have substandard vertical clearances, and the Route 1 interchange ramp acceleration and deceleration lanes have been determined as substandard and existing weave lengths between interchange on ramps and off ramps have been determined as substandard for current traffic volumes.

The third section, labeled as RC3, will include improvements to Route 1 and various access roads; the price for this section has not been determined and improvement alternatives are still being studied by PennDOT.

The final section, labeled as LHB, which was completed in 2014, included 1.6 miles of improvements to Route 1, Maple Avenue, and Route 1 and the Maple Avenue interchange, and has cost $16 million.

Residents are encouraged to visit this page or contact PennDOT and mail in their comments on the project until November 23. For more information, please contact Project Manager Sibty Hasan, PE. 700 Geerdes Boulevard, King of Prussia, PA 19406; 610-205-6854; shasan@pa.gov.
