Middletown Township is a step closer to transitioning all of its streetlights to LED fixtures.
The township, according to officials, has joined a group effort with 40 other municipalities to replace existing streetlights with newer, more efficient technology. The LED fixtures will provide residents with better quality light and in turn, less maintenance and reduced energy costs – guaranteed at over $1.6 million over a 20 year period.

Township supervisors have recently approved the final scope of the project and authorized the program agreement with vendor Johnson Controls, Inc. (JCI), and will soon complete a low interest financing agreement in preparation for construction. Beginning in 2017, JCI is scheduled to install 1,700 cobra head fixtures, while township staff will begin installing 1,000 decorative lights.
Beginning over the summer, JCI audited the township’s streetlight inventory, marking locations, type, wattage, and condition.
The township will pay $1.2 million for the replacement of the 2,700 fixtures. According to JCI, combined with projected maintenance savings, the township will be able to pay off the entire project using savings from the upgrade within eleven years. Over the twenty years of the guaranteed savings, the township will see a net gain of more than $1.1 million.
