Will the Pennsbury School District’s teachers go on strike?

The school board worked Thursday night to put parents at ease after a summer full of rumors. Board President Gary Sanderson read a statement that provided the community with an update on continuing contract talks and rumors of a strike.

As of Thursday night, Sanderson said the district had not received notice from the 850-member Pennsbury Education Association (PEA) on any intention to strike when classes for the district’s 10,200 students start on August 31 and September 1.

The union, per state law, is mandated to provide Pennsbury with a minimum of 48 hours notice before a strike can begin.

“Should there be a work stoppage, information for parents and guardians will be posted on the district website,” Sanderson said. He added that additional means would be used to let community members know of any strike.

Sanderson told the public that the district and PEA representatives have been meeting throughout the summer and he “remains optimistic to achieve a sustainable contract.”

The PEA contract with the district expired on June 30. The school board voted down two state fact-finder reports that could have settled the impasse earlier this year.
