Taxpayers in the Neshaminy School District will pay the same school tax rate that they did last year.

The school board voted 7-2 to approve the $178,999,077 million spending plan for the 2016-2017 school year. Board members Bob Feather and Mike Morris voted against the budget.

The tax rate for the average assessed property in the district will remain at 152 mills, and the average property owner will pay $4,193 in school taxes.

The budget features a $8.8 million gap that is expected to be plugged using fund balance, according to district business administrator Barbara Markowitz. She noted the gap is down from $15 million at the start of 2016.

The district will commit about $1 million from the technology fund to invest in infrastructure and another $2 million from the Public School Employees’ Retirement System (PSERS) reserve fund to pay for pension costs, Markowitz said.

Markowitz told LevittownNow.com the district has planned to use fund balance to cover gaps in previous years but was actually able to come in under budget and even had a surplus last year.

The district has gone several years without a tax increase through cost-saving measures throughout Neshaminy.
