Police from Bristol Township were continuing to search students’ belongings and lockers as of noon after an anonymous weapon threat was received early Tuesday.

Lt. Terry Hughes said the FBI contacted local authorities after receiving word of an online “weapon threat” against Conwell-Egan Catholic High School. Once police and the school learned of the threat, they took action and Conwell-Egan was put into lockdown.

The threat was sent through an anonymous internet proxy, and it will be “extremely hard” to find the person who posted the threat, Hughes said.

The statement from the Archdiocese of Philadelphia:

Earlier today, and after the school day was in progress, school administrators at Conwell-Egan Catholic High School received information from law enforcement that an anonymous threat was reported about a general threat to the safety of the school campus for today, Tuesday, May 10, 2016.

Archdiocesan high schools take any threat seriously as the safety and well-being of students is always a primary concern. Law enforcement personnel are currently on the campus performing thorough sweeps and searches. School administrators are cooperating with them fully and are extremely grateful for their presence.

The school is currently on lockdown as a safety precaution and all standard lockdown procedures are being followed. No students have been harmed.

School families have already received information regarding this matter from the school and will be updated when possible.

Police said that the search was out of an “abundance of caution.”

Some Cowell-Egan parents were upset that the school district didn’t sent out a message until several hours after the threat was received.

“Parents received communication as soon as possible in real time about the lockdown. It’s important to understand that the situation developed rapidly and was fluid. The first responsibility of school administrators was to work cooperatively with law enforcement to ensure student safety. That is the first priority,” archdiocese spokesman Ken Gavin said.

Township police told LevittownNow.com around 10:35 a.m. that Conwell-Egan Catholic High School was locked down and a locker search was being performed due to a “generalized threat” that was received. Acting Lt. Ralph Johnson said the threat was reported to police once classes had begun.

“We’re doing this out of an abundance of caution,” Johnson said of the search.

A rumored threat last month at the high school caused some concern. It was not immediately clear if the two incidents were related.

Pennsylvania State Police troopers were assisting Bristol Township officers at the school.
