Will the Bristol Township School District’s top administrator be leaving the district before next school year?

Rumors have swirled for weeks that Superintendent Dr. Sam Lee is on the short list to replace outgoing Bensalem School District Superintendent Dr. David Baugh. A source with knowledge of Bensalem School District’s operations said Lee, a resident of Bensalem, was being considered for the position.

The Bensalem School Board is expected to pick a new superintendent to serve for a term of three to five years at a meeting Tuesday, June 9.

Baugh elected not to renew his contract and has been looking for employment elsewhere. He made just over $166,000 in 2014 to lead the district of 6,200 students. During his tenure, Baugh weeded out corruption and fraud inside the district.

Lee makes $160,000 per year to lead the Bristol Township School District’s 6,200 students. His contract is set to expire in 2018. Lee has overseen a massive project to close nine aging elementary schools and ongoing construction of three new 1,300-student buildings strategically placed throughout the township. During Lee’s time in Bristol Township, the district’s financial crisis has begun to even out and Lee has said the school system is beginning to rebound. Working an extremely small administrative team compared to surrounding districts, Lee has been criticized for his response to contacts from parents.

If Lee is to leave Bristol Township, the behind schedule construction projects would likely not see any impact and his departure would have no impact on the immediate budget. However, who would fill his position long-term and in the interim is unknown. The Bristol Township School District does not employ an assistant superintendent but does have qualified administrators who could fill Lee’s post.

Lee has declined comment during school board meetings whether he will be leaving Bristol Township.
