Man Who Initiated High-Speed Chase Has Most Serious Offenses Dropped, 9 Others Waived On

A Bristol man who led authorities on a high-speed chase last June where an officer suffered a minor injury had two of his most serious charges dropped on Wednesday.

Darius Newton, 27, is now facing charges of ย simple assault fleeing an officer, reckless endangerment, ย resisting arrest, as well as other associated offenses as two felony charges were dropped against him at his preliminary hearing earlier this week.

Newton was pulled over by Bristol Borough police as part of a routine traffic stop at the ย Luk Oil Station on the corner of Bath Street and Route 13 just before 9:15 p.m on June 6, authorities noted in court records.

Newton provided hisย state ID to authorities and took off out ย of the gas station parking lot ย initiating the high-speed chase in the middle of the roadway, according to court documents.

Newton weaved in and out of ย the construction zone ย nearly missing several vehicles, according to court documents, refusing to stop as authorities demanded.

The high -speed chase ended when the Bristol man hit the front passenger side of a police cruiser and then attempting to flee on foot at Corson Street and Route 13, the probable cause affidavit said.

Newton struggled with police, which caused an injury to Bristol Borough Police ย Sgt. Joe Moorsโ€™ left shoulder, authorities said. The defendant ย was wrestled to the ground by an assisting borough officer, according to court papers.

Moors at the time ย was treated at a local hospital for a minor injury and released.

Newton is ย currently out on bail will appear for his ย formal arraignment in Doylestown on April 11.
