Kevin Strouse, Democratic candidate for Pennsylvania’s 8th Congressional District, earned the backing of a labor group, challenged Congressman Mike Fitzpatrick about PA’s Voter ID Law, and his stance on wages and unemployment insurance. It all amounted to a busy week for the former Army Ranger.

“The Pennsylvania Commonwealth Court’s struck down Governor Corbett’s voter ID law,” Strouse said, ย calling the decision a big win for voting rights in Pennsylvania. ย Strouse argued there was more work to be done, a release said.

“When I served with the Army Rangers in Iraq and Afghanistan, we fought to protect the American values of freedom and democracy,” said Strouse. “Governor Corbett’s Voter ID law threatens these constitutionally guaranteed rights and could prevent up to 500,000 voters in Pennsylvania from casting a ballot, including many here in the 8th District and especially our senior citizens. It’s time for Congressman Fitzpatrick to do the right thing and call for a repeal of Governor Corbett’s discriminatory voter ID law today.”

Strouse, has been taking shots at the sitting congressman recentlyย to support an increase in the minimum wage to $10.10 per hour.

Strouse contends local parents canโ€™t afford to raise children while earning the current minimum wage citing a statewide report that saysย ย support for a wage increase was found to be greatest among women and those ย 50 and over ย adding ย 15 percent of Republicans and 6 percent of Democrats would rather see the minimum wage drop to $6.50 per hour.

On Thursday Strouse picked up two “major” endorsements and again attacked ย Fitzpatrick for his stance on wages and unemployment benefits.

The United Steelworkers (USW) ย said they are ย proud to endorse Kevin Strouse for Congress, in a press release. Citing ย Strouse’s ย advocacy for a fair wages and unemployment insurance in Congress,ย ย said USW PA Director John DeFazio.

“Kevin will… ย fight to rebuild our manufacturing base and to create good paying jobs in southeastย Pennsylvania,” DeFazio said.

“If Congressman Fitzpatrick is serious about promoting economic security, he should end the partisan politics and support a fair increase in the minimum wage,โ€ said Strouse, of Bensalem. โ€œIn addition, Congressman Fitzpatrick should urge a vote to extend long-term unemployment insurance for the 6,000 job seekers in Bucks and Montgomery counties who are trying to put food on the table while looking for work.โ€
