State police working with PennDOT are stepping up enforcement initiatives focusing on seat-belt use and impaired-driving during one of the nation’s busiest travel weeks.
Stepped up police patrol will take place over the Thanksgiving holiday and again from December 1 until New Year’s. Officials are calling the increased enforcement “Operation Safe Holiday.”

“Unfortunately, holiday crash totals have continued to trend upward this year,” PennDOT Secretary Barry J. Schoch said. “Though there was a decrease in December data totals, Thanksgiving continues to be one of the most dangerous weekends for motorists. We continue to urge drivers to buckle up and avoid driving impaired on Pennsylvania’s roadways.”
Roving patrols, DUI checkpoints and safety patrol will be some of the measures police are taking. As of press time, no local checkpoints have been announced.
Over the holiday season last year, 72 people will killed across the state in crashes.
