The US Supreme Court minutes ago released a decision striking down a part of the 1965 Voting Rights Act.

According to CNN, section five was the focus of the court, which deals with the ability of the federal authorities being able to have oversight of local elections in states with a history of voter discrimination. Changes in voting laws and procedures in the covered areas ย of all of ย parts of 16 states — must be “pre-cleared” with Washington.

Congress re-authorized the law in 2006 and subsequently counties in North Carolina and Alabama filed suit.

Civil Rights groups often cite the law saying it brought the principle of true equality of the elections and its process.

The full decision is expected to be released shortly to the public.
