During an evening which followed local flood watches and tornado warnings, regulars and newcomers alike gathered to sit among friends, and unwind from a hectic Thursday. They gathered to play pool, ping pong, and sip their favorite drinks while they sat underneath the glowing lights of a ‘regular’ spot around town, an old familiar place, now with a brand new name and image.
The Five Four Bar and Grill, formerly known as Da Bar of 8919 New Falls Road in Levittown, opened nearly a month ago- and is promising customers an entirely different atmosphere than they had grown to expect from the local hot spot.

Joe Griffin and his partner Gerry Vaughn, purchased Da Bar on December 10 of 2012 and have made it their mission to revamp the building, the menu, and the entertainment. “I wanted to work hard to make everything different so people don’t come in and say it is the same as it was before,” Griffin said with passion as he looks over at the various groups of people gathering at the door. He seemed to know each one as he waves and flashes them all a smile.

“They [previous owners] had tried to clean this place up some before, the space mainly needed some cosmetic changes, a face lift.” After re-staining all the wood, and re-painting the entire space, Griffin knew he was on his way to streamlining a new business, a business he hopes to become ‘the next great neighborhood bar’.

For Griffin though, remodeling the space was not enough. He has culminated over 20 years of industry expertise and revamped the old, traditional, pub-like menu and created some items he knows will become local favorites. “I added seafood to the menu, some craft beers, and a roast pork sandwich,” he said. “That’s what I really want this place to be known for, the roast pork sandwiches.” Just as he says this, a customer passing by gestures to us and says with a smile, “you have to try them, they are so good.”
Another new thing at the bar she raves about? The phoenix dartboard. A dartboard that allows you to play in real time, without delays, with someone in say… Japan.

Following a more than successful launch last weekend, Griffin hopes to wow his new customers with a wide selection of musical entertainment as well. “I brought back happy hour, which the previous owners had done away with, and there is entertainment playing from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. while happy hour is going on,” he said. “I wanted to mix it up between different bands and DJs during the weekends.”
For Griffin, Five Four is now associated as a positive, family friendly, neighborhood bar each night of the week, rather than a local hangout for a younger crowd specifically on the weekends. “I have been in this business all my life, and I think people associated the name of the bar with a younger crowd, and never came here for that reason. Now they are coming in to try it out.”
“I want this place to be the place people talk about, the place they wish was in their neighborhood.”
