Bristol Borough Council has authorized an application for a $3.15 million federal grant to fund a major storm pipe replacement project.

The resolution to pursue funding through the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s (FEMA) Building Resilient Infrastructure and Communities (BRIC) program was approved at Monday evening’s council meeting.

The federal BRIC program is designed to assist local communities in financing hazard mitigation and infrastructure resilience improvements, according to FEMA.

Bristol Borough officials are seeking the grant to cover the entirety of the $3.15 million estimated cost for the Green Lane project. Green Lane often floods in heavy rain events.

The borough is working to install gates that would close the road during severe storms.

In addition to the flood-mitigation grant application, the council took steps to dissolve two local authorities where members were appointed by the borough.

Council members voted to authorize advertising an ordinance that would terminate the Bristol Borough Water and Sewer Authority. The move follows the sale of the system and the transfer of its operating permit to the Bucks County Water and Sewer Authority.

In a separate motion, the council also authorized advertising an ordinance to terminate the Bristol Borough Recreation Authority. Council members said that the dissolution applies strictly to the authority itself, which was originally tied to the financing of a now-sold ice rink, and will have no impact on local recreation programming or the maintenance of public athletic fields.
