According to an affidavit of probable cause filed by Trenton police, the charges stem from a nighttime shooting on Aug. 29, 2025, in Trenton.
During the police response to shots fired on Spruce Street, a city police vehicle was struck by a Jeep driven by a man who had been shot.
The driver of the vehicle that struck a police car was later identified as 41-year-old Andrew Coates, who was pronounced dead from a gunshot wound to the abdomen.

A second victim arrived at Capital Health Regional Medical Center shortly after the shooting with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to the leg, authorities said.
The gunfire also struck two unoccupied vehicles and a residence on Indiana Avenue, and no one inside the home was injured.
Two Trenton officers were treated at a hospital for non-life-threatening injuries, authorities said.
