A $1 billion dollar transaction means three local discount stores will soon have new owners.

Dollar Tree Inc. announced Wednesday it will sell its Family Dollar chain to private equity firms Brigade Capital Management and Macellum Capital Management.

Family Dollar operates locations on Haines Road in Bristol Township, Commerce Circle in Bristol Borough, and along New Falls Road in Middletown Township. Dollar Tree has stores on Commerce Circle in Bristol Borough, New Falls Road in Bristol Township, South Oxford Valley Road and Lincoln Highway in Falls Township, East Lincoln Highway in Middletown Township, and Levittown Parkway in Tullytown Borough.

The sale comes as Dollar Tree has struggled to integrate the two discount brands since acquiring Family Dollar 10 years ago for more than $8 billion.

โ€œThis transaction presented a unique opportunity to play a key role in reinvigorating an iconic business,โ€ said Jonathan Duskin, CEO and Partner of Macellum. โ€œThroughout this process we have met an exceptional group of executives that are dedicated to the Company and its customers. We look forward to executing the strategic plan we have developed together.โ€

Mike Creedon, CEO of Dollar Tree, said the sale marks โ€œa major milestone in our multi-year transformation journey to help us fully achieve our potential.โ€

The Dollar Tree CEO also said on a Wednesday earnings call that separating the two brands will allow each to be managed by dedicated teams.

โ€œDollar Tree and Family Dollar are two different businesses with limited synergies, and each is at a very different stage of its journey,โ€ Creedon said on the call. โ€œSeparating them will enable each banner to be led and managed by a dedicated team that can focus exclusively on that banner’s distinct needs and on realizing each banner’s full potential.โ€

Dollar Tree has been working to streamline its operations and closed about 600 Family Dollar stores in 2024 and has been planning to close another 370, along with 30 Dollar Tree stores, when their leases expire, according to USA Today.

Discount retailers have also noted inflation and new trade wars will cause impacts to their businesses.

Dollar Tree operates approximately 16,500 stores in the U.S. and Canada, while Family Dollar runs about 7,600 stores nationwide.

The transaction is expected to close later in the second quarter of 2025.
