The Pine Street (Route 413) bridge over Route 1 in Middletown Township near the borders with Langhorne and Langhorne Manor boroughs has been designated the Lance Corporal John F. Muffler Memorial Bridge last Thursday.

Muffler, a 19-year-old from Langhorne Manor Borough, was among the 241 U.S. service members killed on October 23, 1983, in the Beirut barracks bombing.
The renaming ceremony took place at the nearby Woods Services property and was attended by U.S. Marines, veterans, friends of Muffler, and members of his family.

State Sen. Frank Farry and State Rep. Joe Hogan, both Republicans, were able to designate the Lance Corporal John F. Muffler Memorial Bridge. Gov. Josh Shapiro, a Democrat, signed the renaming into law.
Vincent Muscato, a childhood friend of Muffler, spearheaded the campaign for the bridge’s renaming a dozen years ago.

“The last time I saw John was his last shift at the Penndel Burger King before he left for boot camp … that would be the last time I saw him,” he said.
Bob Muffler, John’s brother, expressed his family’s gratitude through a letter read by Hogan. He thanked the community for preserving his brother’s memory.

Diane Muffler, another of John’s siblings, highlighted the family’s continued involvement in the community, including sponsoring an award for musicians at Neshaminy High School, which is where Muffler graduated in 1981. Diane noted her mother, Joan, has provided support to many families affected by the Beirut attack.

Ed Preston, leader of the Pennsylvania Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund, noted the importance of remembering those like Muffler, a drummer in the Neshaminy High School Marching Band.
