Officials are alerting residents to the change in bulk waste collection policy in Bristol Township.

The bulk waste collection days are now set to occur once a month.
The change from past years comes as part of the new $34.5 million contract with Waste Management. The five-year agreement started in January.
Under the terms of the previous agreement, Waste Management conducted weekly pickups, deploying trucks across the township to collect large, bulky items that residents discarded. However, that was changed with the new agreement.

Township officials said that often only a few items were collected in many areas, leading to a cost that did not reflect the actual volume of bulk waste being disposed of by residents.
The revamped collection strategy stipulates that residents must now call ahead to schedule the pickup of one bulk item per month. The move was to streamline operations and reduce costs.

Waste Management classifies bulk items as those too large to fit into a standard waste cart, including mattresses, box springs, chairs, bookcases, and appliances. Hazardous materials such as toxic chemicals, pesticides, oil-based paints, weed killers, batteries, and fuels will not be accepted.

Township officials have acknowledged that the change has been a source of frustration for some residents but emphasized the decision’s economic and environmental rationale.
“We understand change is frustrating. The bid package presented all the alternatives to find the most economical and responsible cost for collection and disposal,” the township said in a statement.

Residents are encouraged to plan accordingly for their bulk waste disposal needs. They are asked to remember the new once-a-month collection schedule and the requirement to schedule pickups in advance.
