Tuesday’s special election in the 140th Legislative District could cost taxpayers between $75,000 and $100,000, according to the Bucks County Board of Elections.
The contest between Democrat Jim Prokopiak and Republican Candace Cabanas was needed because State Rep. John Galloway resigned in December after being elected district judge.
The 140th Legislative District seat covers all of Falls Township, Morrisville Borough, Tullytown Borough, and a section of Middletown Township.
The county staffed polling places, mail-in ballot drop boxes, and employees to tally the votes.
Kelly Gale, the acting director of the Bucks County Board of Elections, said recently that the final tally was still being calculated, but the Pennsylvania Department of State will reimburse the county for the special election.
“We had (a special election) in 2020 that was a bit smaller that cost us almost $56,000,” said Gale. “However, mail-in voting was not in effect yet.”
The Bucks County Board of Elections in the county’s 2024 spending plan has a $3.8 million budget and the county set aside an additional $862,000 for voting machines.
The Bucks County Board of Elections handles voter registration, candidate records, voting equipment, the spring primary election, and the November general election.
