PennDOT said “high-priority repairs” on the span that crosses the highway will start next week.

The closure was originally set to start next Monday, May 8, but it will now start Wednesday, May 10 and continue through Monday, September 11.

The closure will take place between Veterans Highway (Route 413) and Bensalem Boulevard, but local traffic will be maintained.

The Trenton Road bridge is a busy route for drivers driving between Middletown Township, Hulmeville Borough, and Bensalem Township. It is also heavily used by parents coming and going from Herbert Hoover Elementary School.

PennDOT lists the bridge as being in “fair” condition.

PennDOT said the Trenton Road bridge work is part of a $44.6 million bridge improvement project taking place in Bucks, Delaware, and Philadelphia counties. Federal funds are covering the cost of the work.

“Repairs to the structures under this project include replacing rocker bearings, frozen sliding plate bearings and deck expansion joints; cleaning and painting steel beams; repairing substructure concrete; and reconstructing bearing pedestals,” according to a statement.

Driscoll Construction Company Inc., of Philadelphia, is the general contractor on the project.

The Trenton Road span over the highway was constructed in 1968 and is 217 feet long.

State data shows that nearly 12,000 vehicles pass over the bridge daily.
