Pennsylvania State Police said the double-fatal crash early Sunday morning on I-295 in Middletown Township is believed to have been caused by a Ford Taurus traveling down the highway in the wrong direction.

The Taurus was being operated by Jenna Paulaski, 21, of Ewing Township, New Jersey, when she slammed head-on into a Jeep Compass driven by Alexander Wetzel, 31, of Media, Delaware County. The Compass was traveling eastbound on I-295 near the Route 1 interchange around 3:20 a.m. when the westbound-in-the-eastbound lanes Taurus collided, state police said.
The Taurus and the Compass both sustained heavy damage, and Paulaski and Wetzel were pronounced deceased at the scene.
The Taurus is suspected of traveling the wrong direction on I-295 since at least the Newtown interchange.

State police said both drivers had seat belts on and their vehicles both deployed airbags.
The crash remains under investigation by troopers.

The highway was closed for several hours Sunday morning as law enforcement investigated the violent crash.
Troopers from Central Bucks County assisted those from the barracks in Lower Bucks County. Middletown Township police also responded.
The Langhorne-Middletown, Penndel, and Parkland fire companies and Bucks County Coroner’s Office additionally worked the scene.
