Demolition of the former Boscov’s store at the Oxford Valley Mall started in late November and was nearly done by the end of December.

Crews continued their work Friday at the Middletown Township property, but the bulk of the work appeared to be completed.

The building was taken down to clear room for the construction of a 614-unit apartment living complex that will be built in what was once a parking lot.

Workers were busy closing off the small remaining portion of the former department store that connects with the rest of the mall.

The demolition of the former Boscov’s was to create open space and make room for possible future retail development abutting the apartment complex.

In September, David Della Porta, a partner for apartment developer CornerstoneTracy, said the work is part of constructing the first phase of the two-phase residences project.

The first units are scheduled to be completed in late 2023, while the complex’s first phase is anticipated to be finished in 2024.

Construction on the 223-unit second phase is expected to start in 2023.

When the complex is complete, it will have 614 apartments spread between two multi-story buildings that will each feature a parking garage. The complex will include a resort-style pool, outdoor kitchen and dining areas, a club room, media room, fitness center, and dog wash.

The apartments planned for the site.

The building that was mostly demolished was first a Wanamaker’s in the 1970s, then a Hecht’s, a Strawbridge’s, and lastly a Boscov’s, which occupied the space until it closed in 2008.

The apartments built by CornerstoneTracy are the first phase of Simon Property Group’s longterm aim to renovate the 1,336,000-square-foot commercial center. As LevittownNow.com exclusively revealed in 2019, the corporation plans to revamp the 190-acre site to account for shifting consumer and corporate preferences.
