Demolition Of Closed Mall Department Store Moves Forward

The demolition of the closed Boscov’s at the Oxford Valley Mall quickly progressed this week.

Outside, demolition of the store moved forward Thursday and Friday. Going into the weekend, large excavators were tearing down the facade and interior of the building.

In September, demolition preparation and clearing of the parking lot at the long-closed department store got underway.

Developer CornerstoneTracy is taking down the building as one of the first steps in the construction of the initial phase of the two-phase residences project.

The first phase is expected to be finished in 2024, with the first units being completed in later 2023.

The second phase that includes 223 units is slated to begin construction in 2023.

In total, 614 apartments will be construction in the two multi-story buildings that will each feature a parking garage at the presently vacant site. The complex will include a resort-style pool, outdoor kitchen and dining areas, a club room, media room, fitness center, and dog wash.

The demolition of the former Boscov’s will add open space and clear room for possible future retail development abutting the mall.

Not all, but most of the building will be torn down and remainder sealed off.

David Della Porta, a partner for CornerstoneTracy, previously said the footprint of the former Boscov’s store won’t be redeveloped by his firm. However, previous plans have indicated eateries are eyed for that location.

The store being demolished opened as a Wanamaker’s in the 1970s, became a Hecht’s, and then a Strawbridge’s before Boscov’s opened in the spot and closed in 2008.

The CornerstoneTracy-developed apartments are the first part of a plan by mall-owner Simon Property Group to remake the 1,336,000-square-foot shopping complex. The company, as LevittownNow.com exclusively reported in 2019, is looking to upgrade the 190-acre property to accommodate changes to business and shopping habits.
