Members of the Bucks County Democratic Committee met earlier this month and voted to make State Sen. Steve Santarsiero the party’s new chairman.

Santarsiero, of Lower Makefield Township, replaced John Cordisco, who had led the organization for 20 years.

“I am honored that the committee has put its trust in me to guide Bucks Democrats over the next four years,” Santarsiero said.

The state senator previously told this news organization he will be able to handle his duties as an elected official and chairperson of the county party.

Santarsiero has come into the post looking to win seats and grow turnout at elections.

“We will be pursuing a number of initiatives that will help us win elections. At the same time, we need to continue to build our network of committee people and volunteers,” Santarsiero said in a statement.

Santarsiero takes the helm as the party is preparing for high-profile governor, congressional, and state legislature races. The economy, an expected rollback of Roe v. Wade, gun regulations, the pandemic, and other issues will be key in the upcoming election.

Santarsiero said he has long been friends with Cordisco, a Bristol Borough native.

“John has been a friend, advisor and mentor. I am grateful for what he has done over these last twenty years. It’s a comfort to know that he will remain just a phone call away,” Santarsiero said.

Cordisco stated: “Steve is the future of our party. He has demonstrated time and again his commitment to our shared democratic values and most importantly, to our community. I wish him the best of luck as he embarks on this new chapter. I also would like to express my sincerest gratitude to the members of the Democratic party for their contributions to this organization and their unwavering support under my leadership.”

The county Democrats have seen some upheaval in recent years, even as row offices were won, over the direction of the party. Some progressive Democrats have felt the party hasn’t supported them like it should.

Santarsiero has been an attorney, a teacher, a state representative, and unsuccessfully ran for Congress in 2016.

Bucks County Republican Committee Chairperson Pat Poprik has been leading her party since 2012 when she replaced Bristol Township resident Harry Fawkes, the longtime GOP leader.
