The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection announced this week that Middletown Township was among nearly 160 county and municipal governments to receive funds to provide a boost to their recycling and leaf-collection programs.
The township grant is $132,713 and will go toward improving and expanding recycling efforts.
โThese grants help bolster recycling in communities all over Pennsylvania and reduce the amount of waste going into our landfills,โ said Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection Secretary Patrick McDonnell. โWhether itโs from increased education for residents or an entire facility for sorting recyclables, these grants are making a difference.โ

โThe more we know about recycling and its importance, the more our community will benefit from its positive impacts,โ said State Rep. Frank Farry, a Republican from Langhorne Borough. โThis grant will go a long way in educating our community on the different ways to reduce waste through safe and easy avenues.โ
โI am looking forward to Middletown Township using this great opportunity in expanding our efforts, reducing our environmental impacts and minimizing the footprint we leave,โ Farry added.

In Bucks County, Lower Makefield Township and Quakertown Borough also received grant awards.
A 2017 Recycling Economic Impact Study found more than 66,000 people are employed directly in the recycling marketplace, while nearly 110,000 others work via indirect or induced recycling-related jobs. Recycling adds $22.6 billion to Pennsylvaniaโs state product. Recycling also is important to the commonwealthโs climate-change initiatives: nearly 10 million metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions are avoided each year. This is equivalent to removing 2.15 million cars (or approximately 25 precent) from Pennsylvaniaโs roads annually.
State and local officials have advised residents of a growing littering problem in recent years.
